I Need WHAT??!!?
Talking to my friend and doing some quick research online I found that I will need a few things to get started.
- Some hive boxes (for the bees)
- A solid base to set up the hives
- Some protective clothing so I don't get stung
- A smoker that helps calm the bees when I need to interact with them
- If this succeeds, maybe some stuff to help winterize the hive next winter
- And the most important thing BEES!
I would need to buys a queen bee and a large set of workers and some drones. Looking at some sites choosing what bees to get is quite a complex process. There are lots of types of bees and many factors to consider when choosing the bees to get. This will require a lot of research and I will post info as I find out more.
The most interesting thing I found was what I was least expecting to need for this. This is considered an agricultural enterprise and I actually need a license from the State of Utah to keep bees!! Wow!! WhoWouldHaveThunk!!
If you need to get a Beekeeper's License in Utah here's the place to go. Luckily, in Utah, you can do this all online and it's a fairly painless process. As of the time of writing this post, the costs were as follows:
- 0 - 20 Hives : $10 / year
- 21 - 100 Hives : $25 / year
- Over 100 Hives : $50 / year
Looks like there is also some good information provided by the State of Utah - HERE,
More soon.
